MARR Announces New Program Initiative to Combat Nicotine Dependence
February 2021
Nicotine addiction is a serious problem for people in recovery and is actually more deadly than all of the other drugs of misuse combined – including heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine. In some estimates, up to 90% of recovery house residents use nicotine either by smoking, vaping or chew. Research has shown that nicotine dependence increases the chance of relapse of a Substance Use Disorder. In early recovery, it is common to review all elements of one’s life and initiate change. Quitting nicotine is one of these changes. MARR wants to be sure that every recovery house in Maine displays the resources available to help those who make the choice to quit.
We are fortunate in our state that significant help is available to those who want to quit. The Maine CDC has made available posters, signs, pamphlets and other messaging aimed at young people (especially around vaping). MARR has obtained a variety of these materials and is distributing them to all of our certified houses. Further, for those persons who receive MaineCare, nicotine replacement therapy is available at no or little cost. The Maine QUITLINK maintains a Helpline – 1-800-207-1230 and further details are available at Maine QuitLink.com.
